A Giant Firework started the 2013 swim at 12.30pm on Saundersfoot Beach where a record 1724 swimmers and thousands of spectators welcomed in the New Year at the annual Saundersfoot New Year’s Day Swim in Pembrokeshire.

The charitable event just gets bigger and better – and in its 29th year, the hundreds of swimmers pulled out all the stops embracing the event in some really sensational fancy dress. Highlights included Punk Rockers, New Year’s Day freaks, penguins, a submarine and a troop of Mario characters.

To warm-up prior to the event the assembled swimmers took part in a mass performance of Gangnam Style. It was then up to International rugby referee Nigel Owens to lay down the rules and signal the starting whistle! The swimmers were sent on their way by a firework launch courtesy of Westcoast Fireworks. Such was the excitement, Nigel Owens fully joined in the spirit of the event. The swim was remarkable for another reason too this year as we has our first marriage proposal, so congratulations to the newly engaged couple.

Onlookers were also treated to a visit from the Tenby’s RNLI Lifeboat - ‘Haydn Miller’.

Saundersfoot Festivities Chairman Martyn Williams said, "Again we have exceeded expectations and have broken all records. Twenty nine years on and this event is getting bigger and better with thousands of pounds being raised for charity. The people from Saundersfoot, the surrounding areas and even farther a field have come out in force to support this marvellous event".
